Dr Pepper is a unique drink. A pharmacist named Charles Alderton created the drink in 1885, and he may have been attempting to re-create the smell of a drugstore in Waco, Texas, where he worked. Strange, right? But he came up with the peppery deliciousness we all love today.

Legend has it Alderton named the drink after the father of a girl he was in love with.

Dr Pepper was introduced to the larger public at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, which also introduced hamburger and hot dog buns, along with ice cream cones. The Dr Pepper Company is the oldest major manufacturer of soft drink concentrates and syrups in the U.S., but now has a parent company called the Dr Pepper Snapple Group.

As for the 23 flavors? Well, one fan site speculates that they are cola, cherry, licorice, amaretto almond, vanilla, blackberry, apricot, blackberry, caramel, pepper, anise, sarsaparilla, ginger, molasses, lemon, plum, orange, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, coriander juniper, birch and prickly ash. Others think cinnamon, spikenard, caramel, raspberry and grape may be involved.

But no one knows for sure! Dr Pepper says the ingredients are proprietary information and doesn’t have a flavor list available.
