DENVER – A Denver7 Weather Action Day is in effect into Tuesday morning, with a couple inches of snow expected in the metro area and higher amounts in the foothills and mountains.
Temperatures will reach the upper 50s in Denver Monday before a system moves across the state Monday night and early Tuesday morning, bringing snow to the mountains and rain that is likely to transition to snow in the early-morning hours to the metro area and lower elevations of northeastern Colorado.
Winter weather advisories will be in effect for the central and southwestern mountains, foothills and Palmer Divide from midnight tonight until noon Tuesday.
The central mountains will begin to see snow Monday evening and should expect between 5 and 10 inches at higher elevations.
In the Palmer Divide areas in Douglas and Elbert counties, the precipitation is expected to start as rain, which will transition to snow overnight. The area is expected to receive 3-6 inches of snow and winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour. The foothills in Teller County will see between 3 and 8 inches of snow.
The metro-area foothills and western suburbs should see between 2 and 4 inches of snow, according to the latest forecasts, but most of the accumulation is expected between 5 and 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
The snow in the metro area, which is expected to fall during the commute hours, could create poor driving conditions.
The Sangre de Cristos and parts of the San Juans will see snow totals in the 5 to 14 inches range, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts.
Denver should see between 1 and 3 inches of snow, but temperatures will warm to around 40 degrees Tuesday, with clearing skies. The northeastern plains should expect to receive between a trace and 3 inches of snow.
But NWS forecasters said there was still uncertainty about snow totals with the storm and where, or if, any bands could set up.
Wednesday will be sunny and warmer, and Thanksgiving will bring temperatures in the 40s for Denver with a chance of light snow into the evening.
