DENVER – Most of Colorado’s mountains are in for more snow this week after well over a foot fell in many mountain communities last week and through the holiday weekend.
While parts of the Front Range began to warm from the frigid temperatures seen over the last few days, winter weather advisories are in effect again for western Jackson and Grand counties above 9,000 feet, the Elkhead, Park Mountains and Flat Tops, and San Juan Mountains through Tuesday evening.
Those areas could see 5 to 10 inches of snow and high wind gusts at the upper elevations, according to the National Weather Service.
There are also avalanche watches in effect for the Aspen, Gunnison, Grand Mesa and North San Juan zones until Tuesday morning. Avalanche danger was rated as “considerable” (3 of 5 on the Colorado Avalanche Information Center scale) in all of the zones across the state and was expected to reach “high” levels on Tuesday in some areas.
Two more people died in avalanches in Colorado over the weekend, bringing the season total to 10 deaths already. The CAIC says large avalanches are likely across the state.
The National Weather Service said the snow in the mountains will become more widespread and heavier Monday afternoon into the evening.
Along with the areas under winter weather advisories, mountains along the Front Range and in Summit County will also pick up 3 to 6 inches of snow through Tuesday, according to forecasters.
By Tuesday evening, some of the snow showers could reach the I-25 corridor, the National Weather Service said, though accumulations are expected to be minimal.
But there is another chance of a couple inches of snow for the plains late Wednesday into Thursday morning before temperatures are expected to warm into the 40s this weekend.
Meanwhile, the mountains look to be in for another round of snow Friday and Saturday before some clearing next week.
