Milder weather to return to Denver area

Starting Wednesday, the Arctic air-mass that brought frigid temperatures to Denver Tuesday, will slowly drift to the east of Colorado. Warmer air will return and our temperatures will rise back to the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Partly cloudy skies, mild and dry conditions remain through Thursday and Friday.

Snow has mostly ended in the mountains, but roads will still be treacherous in spots. Please practice caution if traveling through the high country.  In addition, the Avalanche Danger remains high in the central and northern mountains.  The recent heavy snow falling on top of an old, weak snow-pack has resulted in extreme avalanche conditions.  Skies, riders and snow-mobilers are urged to stay out of the backcountry for now.

The Arctic air will not be far away, lurking just to the north and east of Colorado where temperatures will stay very cold from Wyoming and Nebraska to the Dakotas.  A slight shift in the wind pattern could bring the chill right back into Denver and the eastern plains.

We will keep watching, but it appears that some of the colder air and a little snow might move back into the area over the New Year holiday weekend.
