DENVER — Changes in the weather are coming to Colorado this Sunday.

This next storm will bring snow to the majority of our mountains... along with wind, rain and snow showers to the Front Range and plains Sunday PM. Dry conditions and sunshine will prevail for the first half of Sunday in Denver. Rain showers are expected to develop in the late-afternoon on Sunday. Highs will top out in the mid-50s.

As of now, just an hour or two could make a big difference for the timing of changeover from rain to snow on Sunday night. Denver may just see rain, but lows are expected to drop below freezing overnight Sunday.

In terms of how much accumulation we can expect, the mountains and foothills are looking at around 5-10 inches at higher elevations through the day and night. The I-25 corridor from Denver to Fort Collins may see around 1-3 inches of snow overnight. The Palmer Divide and much of Elbert county can expect anywhere from 3-6 inches.

If you or someone you know are traveling across Colorado, be prepared for slick roads and poor visibility at times Sunday PM. The winds will also be very strong.

A First Alert Action Day will be issued for the Front Range on Saturday at 10 p.m. through Sunday night.

It looks like the snow will taper off Monday morning, as this system moves east. Highs to start next week will be in the 50s with partly cloudy skies. A warm-up, with highs in the mid to upper 60s, will return by mid-week.

What we really need is a good snow storm!  Snow has been scarce this season with only seen 19.6" of snow at Denver International Airport — about half normal at this point in the season.

In the mountains, the snow-pack is roughly at 70 percent of normal for the season, with the southern mountain areas in the worst shape. The storms in late February did help, but the recent mild and quiet weather has lessened the snow-pack a bit in the past week.  Looking ahead — we could use several more good snowstorms!
