DENVER —Tuesday was a hot day across the state, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s across the Denver area and plains. Denver has reached 92 degrees, a new record for the date, eclipsing the old mark of 90 degrees, set in 2009. Winds were whipping with gusts of 35-45 mph increasing fire danger across much of the Front Range and the mountains.

Scattered thunderstorms rumbled across the eastern plains through the evening with lightning and strong winds the main threats - most of the storms did not produce much rain, but there were a couple of tornado warnings near Sugar City and La Junta.

Winds will subside a little overnight, but they will pick up again for Wednesday with another day of hot and mostly dry conditions expected.

The warmth and the wind raised fire danger over the southern half of Colorado - Red Flag Warnings will be in effect again Wednesday for the southern Denver metro area, southern foothills and the central and southwest mountains.

Wednesday will see mid 80s on the plains, with a few more late day storms. A fast moving cold front will usher in some cooler air by Thursday. The winds will pick up with the passage of the front and that means continued fire danger across parts of Colorado on Thursday.

Temperatures will be cooler on Thursday with highs in the 60s in the mountains and 70s for the plains.

Friday and Saturday will be dry and pleasant, followed by a better chance for thunderstorms on Sunday.
