Denver hit a new record high Sunday afternoon as the temperature soared to 101 degrees, easily beating the old mark of 98° set in 1979!

Highs on Sunday

A dome of high pressure continued to cover the Rocky Mountain region. This bubble of hot air has been blocking any cooling fronts from bringing down temperatures or producing precipitation.

The chance for moisture will be spotty tonight with scattered thunderstorms offering some relief from the heat and the dry conditions. They could cause more trouble, though, due to wind and lightning.

The outlook will get cooler this week as this hot air dome will weaken and shift to the west, allowing some cooler air to flow into the region.

Monday will still be quite hot with highs in the middle 90s and just a few afternoon storms. There will be a better chance for thunderstorms starting Tuesday and highs will drop nicely through the week.

By the end of the week, storms will be likely each day and the highs will be below average for early August - just in the low 80s!
