DENVER – A rockslide closed both directions of U.S. Highway 6 through Clear Creek Canyon before dawn, though after inspection once the sun rose and a patch job on the road, the highway was back open before 9 a.m.
The rockslide happened sometime before 4 a.m. Wednesday west of Tunnel 1.
Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation said the highway was closed between Highway 93 in Golden and Highway 119 east of Idaho Springs.
CDOT crews were able to take a look at the condition of the road and the rock face next to it after sunrise.
CSP said just before 7:30 a.m. that the roadway had been deemed safe to reopen, and that the highway would open back up once the rocks were cleared from the roadway. But minutes later, the agency said that CDOT crews found a large pothole in the road they would have to patch before the highway reopens.
The repairs were done by 8:45 a.m. and the road reopened. CSP said that there would be another brief closure either Wednesday or Thursday to repair fencing at the site.
