DENVER – A major crash along Interstate 70 closed the eastbound lanes of the highway from New Castle to Canyon Creek for several hours, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said the interstate reopened around 5 p.m.
An official with the CSP initially said in a tweet a semi was involved in a crash involving multiple vehicles, but provided no other details about how the crash occurred or if anyone was injured.
Gary Cutler, a CSP spokesperson, told Denver7 that at approximately 9 a.m., a concrete truck driving west on I-70 lost control and crossed over into the eastbound lanes, striking a pickup. Cutler said first responders at the scene saw the cement truck ended up on top of the pickup.
"The driver of the pickup is alive but trapped," Cutler said, adding the entire crash was "teetering on the edge."
Two trucks were brought in to help stabilize the crash scene so crews can safely rescue the driver, Cutler said.
Two medical helicopters were on scene evacuating people injured in the crash, a spokesperson with the Garfield County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Two people were taken to area hospitals - one of them being the driver of the concrete tuck, Cutler added. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
