EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. – The Colorado Department of Transportation shut down westbound traffic on Interstate 70 at Copper Mountain, and and eastbound traffic just east of Vail, after a semi-truck and trailer crashed in the middle of the median near Vail Pass for about three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
The interstate was shut down not long after 5 p.m. Friday as travelers made their way across the interstate for Labor Day weekend. CDOT said drivers should expect “long delays.” Eastbound detours were along the frontage road near Vail, CDOT said. The westbound closure sat at Copper Mountain as of 6 p.m., but was lifted around 6:20 p.m., according to CDOT.
The eastbound closure was lifted just before 8 p.m.

CDOT advised travelers of stop and go traffic as crews worked to completely the scene.
It is the second semi-truck crash to shut down I-70 on Friday ahead of the holiday weekend. A crash just west of the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels shut down the westbound lanes of the interstate for several hours Friday morning.
