DENVER -- Determined and focused. Those are two words that could easily have been used to describe the teenage Melody Fairchild, who won the BolderBOULDER three times.
More than 25 years later, Melody the mom is just as focused and maybe a bit more relaxed.
“It is now my passion to give back to the running community, especially the youth, what it's given to me,” she told Denver7’s Molly Hendrickson during a recent training run.
To make that happen, she’s created the Boulder Mountain Warriors youth running club, the Boulder Women Run running group and a summer running camp for young women.
“I created the camp to give girls a place to come to learn how to be ready for a lifetime of healthy running,” she said added the focus is on health body image, sense of self and self-confidence. “Focused on building great kids, great characters first and great athletes second.”
Now 44 years old, Melody has taken some breaks from running over the years but never given it up. In fact, she’s set her sights on running the Leadville 100 a few years down the road.
“I’m thinking when I’m 50. That sounds like a good age to run 100 miles,” she laughed.
While motherhood and other commitments have kept her away from the BolderBOULDER for a few years, Melody says there is nothing that could keep her away from the 40th running of the race.
“It's my favorite day of the year in Boulder,” she said. “It's my Christmas.”
