DENVER, Colo.— Denver skateboarder Spencer Breaux is getting ready to compete in the X-Games qualifier June 15 and 16 in Boise, Idaho. Only the top six athletes will receive invites to the X-Games in Minneapolis in July.
Spencer Breaux’s love for skateboarding started when she was 5 years old.
"I just wanted to do everything. I wanted to do all the ramps, I just wanted to learn everything super fast,” Breaux said.
Her passion for the sport led her to the competitive side of skateboarding.
"I like how it’s different from other sports because you can be creative and have your own style, pretty much do whatever you want with it. There is no one goal that you have to do,” she said.
Most days you can find Spencer at local skate parks around Denver practicing tricks and getting ready for future competitions, and she says there is nothing like the feeling she gets when she lands a trick she’s been working so hard to perfect.
"Ride one and you land it just feels like a big accomplishment, like you just did something that you're proud of,” she said.
Now at 14, she’s preparing to compete in her second X-Games qualifier. She skated last year but didn’t advance. Now that she knows what to expect, she’s been working hard to make sure she doesn’t miss the podium again.
“I've been working on stuff, so I get less nervous at contests because it is a lot of pressure, all those people watching you. I really want to be in the X-Games so, like, obviously I have pressure on myself because I want to do well,” she said.
Beyond getting a chance to compete in the X-Games, Spencer has dreams of becoming a professional skateboarder, with big goals for the summer of 2020.
"Olympics would be a big accomplishment. That would be one of my goals and take it as far as possible I guess,” she said.
