CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Sunday provides an ideal intersection of DeMarcus Ware's greatness.
The outside linebacker forged an All-Pro career with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving as the franchise's all-time sacks leader. He provided a finishing touch with the Broncos, his motivational speech on the eve of Super Bowl 50 viewed as a driving force among defenders for Denver to pull off the upset.
Ware, 35, signed a one-day contract in April, allowing him to retire as a Dallas Cowboy. However, he left an indelible imprint during his three-year run in Denver. Not only did he mentor Von Miller, helping steer the All-Pro at a time when his career was at a crossroads, but Ware served as a wrecking ball in the passing game. Ware played his best when it mattered most, including during the playoff run following the 2015 season when he netted 3.5 sacks.
The Broncos will honor Ware and his family at in Sunday's pregame between the Cowboys and Broncos. He could serve as an honorary captain. Ware visited the Broncos this offseason, and was presented a framed jersey
"He is one of my favorite teammates. He showed up every day with that smile," said Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, like Ware, a strong candidate to reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "He used to love to get me on pass protection, and I'd joke that I always wanted him in coverage. He is a great player and an even better person. He's worthy of all the accolades he gets. He deserved the Super Bowl."
Ware retired following last season because of long term health concerns. He has dabbled in media work and was a team captain in the revival of "The Battle of The Network Stars." Ware finished with 138.5 sacks, including 21.5 with the Broncos in 37 regular-season games.
