Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America Thursday.

He shares the honor with former Cincinnati Offensive Coordinator Hue Jackson. Jackson is now Cleveland’s head coach.

The Broncos finished the regular season with the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense for the first time in franchise history, allowing 283.1 yards per game.

The unit also ranked first in pass defense and third in rush defense, in addition to leading the league with 52 sacks.

"It’s great for Wade," Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said. "He’s been a tremendous coach in this league whether an assistant coach or head coach. That’s a great honor. The job that he’s done with the defense—the job that the staff has done, really."
