A rare young dolphin swimming off the coast of Argentina died when beach-goers took the animal from the water.

According to CNN, an Argentinean wildlife organization said the people took pictures and "selfies" with the La Plata dolphin and left it for dead in the sand of Santa Teresita.

YouTube video shows a man reaching into the water to grab the dolphin. People surround the mammal but no one appears to try to stop the crowd.

The wildlife organization, Vida Silvestre, urges people to help rescue the animals.

This type of dolphin swims in the Rio de La Plata and along the Atlantic coast between Argentina and Uruguay. CNN reports hundreds of La Plata dolphins were caught in gill nets in the 60s and they were put on the Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.

The Washington Post writes only 30,000 La Plata dolphins exist in the wild.
