DENVER – Dobby the giraffe, who captured our hearts as we all patiently awaited April’s birth last year, is turning 1 next week – and you’re invited to the party.

The Denver Zoo on Sunday posted a photo of the smiling reticulated giraffe, saying zoo staff was throwing him a party at the giraffe habitat on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The party will start at 1:30 p.m. and zoo officials ask that you save the date!

No other details were provided.

Dobby was born at 3 a.m. to mother Kipele and father Dikembe. The giraffe’s birth was a surprise for the Denver Zoo, who said at the time they didn’t know Kipele was pregnant, though they had their suspicions.

Dobby’s birth brings the total number of giraffes at the Denver Zoo to five.

Kipele was born at the Denver Zoo in 1993 and is currently the zoo’s oldest giraffe. Dobby’s father, Dikembe, was born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs in 1993 and moved to Denver in 1996.

The Denver Zoo has been caring for giraffes since 1973 and since then, more than 70 giraffes have been born and raised at the zoo. Dobby is the zoo’s first birth since October 2010.
