BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft of the XX have always delivered the sounds that pang our hearts with hopes of intimacy and tender loss. The sweetness of their conversations to the Colorado audience shared the connection with the music and yearning to be at Red Rocks that snowy evening.
But the tour stop both spoke of was not meant to be as the XX moved to First Bank Center near Denver due to an October snow storm. That did not stop band members Croft, Sim and Jamie XX to connect to the crowd with basslines and beats.
From the early works from their debut album, XX was holding the audience so familiar with the four part beginning: Intro, VCR, Crystalised and Islands. Most of the crowd had played that first side so many times through love and loss, hanging on the the words of Sim and Croft's interchanging relationship. Hearing it live brings up the memories of those sweet feelings.
The showmanship of Croft’s guitar and Sim’ bass brought more rock and roll to the dance party lifting the room as a laser show took over the party. Away from recollection and constructing something new and exciting was revealed.
When member Jamie XX’s song Loud Places began its notes, the crowd set intentions of making this night special. The crowd moved on the dance floor when On Hold played, letting their body take over. The night ended with Angels, which the members of the XX truly are when they care for their fans.
“We love you,” said Croft. “Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other”
