COLORADO SPRINGS — A police shooting involving a Colorado Springs officer left one person dead Saturday night after what police said was a "family disturbance" involving a gun.
The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said the call came in before 5 p.m. Saturday along the 3100 block of Illinois Avenue, which is near the intersection of Fillmore and Hancock.
Before officers arrived, two family members were able to escape the home, leaving the armed suspect inside with one other family member.
As police were formulating their safety plans, they contacted the armed suspect and ordered the suspect to drop their gun, police said.
"The suspect did not follow the officer’s verbal commands to drop the gun and raised the gun toward the officers," CSPD said on social media. "In response, two officers fired at least one shot, striking the suspect. Officers provided immediate medical aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead on scene."
According to police, no officers were injured. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office will take over the investigation and body camera video will be released in 21 days.
No other family members involved in the incident were injured.
