ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Relief is on the way for furloughed federal workers in the Aspen area during the ongoing government shutdown.
The Aspen Times reports Pitkin County commissioners on Wednesday unanimously passed an emergency resolution to allow the county to be able to temporarily hire furloughed federal employees.
The resolution says the idea is "to assist in helping a limited number of the workers who reside in our local communities to obtain temporary, on-call employment . with Pitkin County to assist them in being able to pay the cost of their mortgages and other expenses."
The emergency resolution temporarily waives county personnel policies governing selection and recruitment of employees. Pitkin County Manager Jon Peacock says federal employees have already gone through that vetting process, so the county can now bring them on quickly.
