Polis admits campus rape comments went too far

Posted

A Boulder congressman says he went too far in his attempt to defend the role of colleges and universities in campus sex assault cases.

The Daily Camera reports Democratic Congressman Jared Polis suggested during a subcommittee meeting on campus rape prevention last week that if 10 people are accused of sexual assault and there is a reasonable likelihood one or two are guilty, it seems best to expel all 10.

Polis wrote a column published by the Boulder newspaper Tuesday saying his comments were "a major gaffe" and that he "went too far."

A student had argued that schools should stay out of criminal justice cases, and Polis says universities have an obligation under Title IX to keep the campus free of sexual discrimination.
