DENVER – For the second time in as many years, a campaign is underway to remove a reference to slavery from Colorado’s state constitution. Right now it says, “There shall never be, in this state, either slavery or involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.” Supporters of Amendment A want that exception removed.
There was a similar question on the ballot back in 2016, but it failed in part due confusing wording.
“Many of our voters did not really understand whether to vote yes or no,” said Lee McNeil, a board member with Together Colorado. “Another drawback was many didn’t vote at all.”
This version of the proposal will be decided during this November’s election in Colorado.
