Colorado Electoral College voters may cast their vote for a Republican

DENVER -- Colorado law requires that our states nine Electoral College voters all cast their votes for the presidential candidate who won the state during the primary election.

This year that would mean nine votes for Hillary Clinton, but some of Colorado’s electoral voters say they may cast their votes for someone else, even a Republican, if it means keeping Donald Trump out of the White House.

“Obviously if there were 270 votes for Hillary Clinton, I would be voting for Hillary Clinton,” Polly Baca told Anne Trujillo on this week’s Politics Unplugged. “What we’re doing is talking to Republicans about their conscience and their moral responsibility, just like I have a moral responsibility to vote for someone that would be good for our country. So we’re talking to republican electors to see if we can put together 270 votes for an alternative candidate.  I’m willing to vote for that candidate.”

Trujillo asked what Republicans Baca might be willing to cast her vote for.

“If it was somebody like John Kasich or John Hussman, or any of those responsible…  or even Mitt Romney.  Somebody who we know cares about this country and will follow the laws of this country.”

Baca said this is not an easy decision. While she said she’s supported losing candidates before during her 50 years in politics, Baca said this time is different.

“This is the first time in my life that I’ve actually been afraid of the candidate that was chosen by the Republicans,” Baca said. “I’m actually concerned about our country, I’m truly afraid for our country, and that’s why we’re doing this.”
