BROOMFIELD, Colo. — In 2017, IKEA announced it would open a second Denver-area store in Broomfield on Highway 7 close to the I-25 ramp.
But two years after the announcement, construction still has not started on the new IKEA store, prompting some to wonder if IKEA will still locate in Broomfield.
At the beginning of this year, IKEA released plans to restructure the company and that included creating smaller stores in smaller markets and scrapping plans to open in certain cities.
“There were three cities that were told IKEA wasn’t coming. We weren’t one of those,” said Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens.
Ahrens said IKEA still plans to open eight stores, and although the process has been slow, Broomfield will be one of the eight new locations.
“Of those eight locations, they own property in three of them. One of the properties that they own is the property right here in Broomfield,” he said.
Ahrens said he thinks IKEA is still interested in Broomfield because of the city and county’s continued growth.
“This area is growing rather quickly…and over the next 15 years we’ll probably see 60,000 new people move in,” Ahrens said.
IKEA owns a total of 120 acres, more than they need for the actual store.
Ahrens said surveyors have been out to the site recently but there's still no word on when construction will officially begin.
