DENVER — A garage door in the Congress Park neighborhood has been bringing neighbors together for years in an unlikely way.
The garage door displays dozens of magnetic letters like the kind you might find on a refrigerator door.
“They keep multiplying. They disappear, a storm will come and blow them off and then they come back. We’ve never actually added any letters to this garage,” said homeowner David Meggitt.
Meggitt, whose home is located at the corner of 11th Ave. and Steele St., said that on any given day his garage displays all kinds of messages like “Love is not dead” and “No war.”
“We’ve had three wedding proposals, we’ve had just a lot of political stuff, most of it good,” Meggitt said.
The de facto community message board was created about seven years ago.
“One of the neighbors actually put letters on this garage door. And I don’t know if it was kind of her idea to get the neighborhood to communicate with each other, but it worked,” Meggitt said.
Meggitt said the garage door is so loved that he’s put off doing some much-needed repairs.
“My garage door's in pretty bad shape and I keep thinking I need to replace it, but I just can’t seem to get around to taking the letters off.”
Meggitt said everyone who passes by is welcome to leave a message, as long as that message is appropriate.
