AURORA, Colo. -- More open green space in Colorado could disappear in favor of more housing — this time near the Aurora-Centennial line.
About 15 acres of land next to Valley Country Club on East Arapahoe Road, across from Cornerstar Shopping Center, could look a lot different depending on how the Aurora City Council votes.
The land was given an urban green space designation. The country club requested that be amended in hopes of putting homes and commercial property on the land.
There were more than 60 comments at a neighborhood meeting earlier this month with residents expressing concerns ranging from drainage to the City of Centennial objecting, and traffic.
Julie Welly, who lives in Aurora, said she is concerned about the potential traffic increase.
"Bringing more development means more traffic and just more fussiness," she said.
Many residents voiced similar concerns. But the most overwhelming issue they said was losing the green space that makes Colorado, well, Colorado.
"This state is beautiful," Welly said. "And when you take out the views, I'm sorry, you are going to take the beauty away from it."
On Monday, Aurora City Council will hold a hearing on the issue at 7:30 p.m. at the Aurora Municipal Center.
