President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States is "terminating its relationship" with the World Health Organization.
Trump previously announced a freeze on funding to the WHO, saying that his administration was assessing "the WHO's role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus."
The United States is the largest contributor to the WHO, which was formed in 1948 by the United Nations. The United Nations has long been a target of Trump’s.
According to the WHO, the United States provides 14.67% of funding to the organization.
Trump's comments came the same week that COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. topped 100,000 — the most in the world.
Trump also used Friday's press conference to slam China's recent move to limit Hong Kong's autonomy. Trump called the move a "tragedy for people of Hong Kong" and added that China had replaced its famed "one country two systems" with "one country, one system."
The president left the podium without taking questions, ignoring questions shouted by reporters regarding nationwide protests calling for justice for
George Floyd,
a black man who died in police custody on Monday.
