SALT LAKE CITY – A municipal police chief in Mexico has been arrested under suspected ties to the mass murder of a family near the U.S.-Mexican border, Reuters reports.

According to Reuters, who cites local media reports and an official, Mexican authorities have arrested Fidel Alejandro Villegas, a police chief in northern Mexico.

Nine people — three women and six children —were killed in early November while traveling in Mexico.

The massacre of the women and children is suspected to have been at the hands of drug cartel hitmen.

The arrest comes a month after President Donald Trump said he wanted to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
