WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ketanji Brown Jackson gave thanks to those who helped get her confirmed as the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court during a celebration event at the White House on Friday.

"I have to give thanks to God for delivering me as promised and for sustaining me throughout this nomination and confirmation process," Jackson said.

Jackson, who will become the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, also thanked President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris for the historic nomination.

"It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointments for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States—but we've made it," Jackson said.

When introducing Jackson, Biden said one of the reasons he ran for president was because he wanted the opportunity to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

"It's a powerful thing when people can see themselves in others," Pres. Biden said.

Harris, the first woman to serve as vice president, noted that "today is indeed a wonderful day."

Jackson will replace Justice Stephen Breyer after he retires in late June or July.
