Xcel Energy's Renewable Connect lets users buy into a large-scale solar system

Posted

DENVER — If you want to use solar power, but don't have a place to put the solar panels, Xcel Energy has another option -- Renewable Connect.

Renewable Connect is a 50 MW, large-scale, solar system in Deer Trail.

"Customers can opt in to own a piece of that system for periods of month-to-month, five years or 10 years," explained Alice Jackson, the president of Xcel Energy Colorado.

Jackson said it's a good program for people who can't put solar panels on their house because of trees, or people who live in an apartment.

"You can still participate," Jackson said.

Subscribers to the program pay their regular electric bill, and an extra fee for the solar plant, but they get the knowledge that they're contributing to renewable energy.

The deadline to enroll is July 18.
