DENVER — It's any dog owner's worst nightmare: Losing their dog only to find out it's been adopted. Legally there is nothing an owner can do.

Candy Argon contacted Denver7 for help after she found out her lost dog had been found and put up for adoption by the Denver Animal Shelter.

A spokesperson with the shelter said that under the rules an animal is held for five days before it can be placed for adoption. In Argon’s case her dog was adopted on his ninth day at the shelter. Argon's dog was also found with no identification or a microchip.

After making several phone calls, Denver7's Sally Mamdooh learned the new owners decided to bring the dog back to the shelter without an apparent reason.

Argon plans to pick her dog up from the shelter Monday morning.
