DENVER — Amtrak's Winter Park Express ski train will start its 2019 season on Friday. This year, the train will run on Saturdays, Sundays and the first two Fridays of each month through March 31.
The train started in the 1940s. It was sold and stopped running in 2009, but Amtrak, Winter Park and Union Pacific worked to bring it back.
"There was a nine-year period with no train," said Steve Hurlbert with Winter Park Resort. "We felt it at Winter Park. It [the train] made Winter Park stand apart. Think of all great ski resorts in Colorado, we were only one that had a train. The Amtrak partnership has really made this happen and bring this Colorado iconic institution back."
New this year will be a lounge car with drinks and snacks.
"The number one thing we've been hearing in the first two years is a request for food and beverage service -- coffee in morning, maybe other stuff coming back and snacks." said Marc Magliari, an Amtrak spokesman. "We'll serve that in this car with ceiling to floor windows in it. You an see a lot more climbing up from Denver to Winter Park."
Tickets starts at $29 each way.
