WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — The smell of fresh baked goods isn’t what a shopper would typically smell when entering a pet store, but Cosmo’s Dog Bakery and Pet Store in Wheat Ridge is different.

“The bakery for Cosmo's Dog Bakery is in the back of the retail shop,” said Jack Ziska who helps run Cosmo’s Dog Bakery and Pet Store with his wife, store owner Christy Ziska.

Aside from 15 kinds of fresh baked dog biscuits, the store also sells 100 different brands of dog and cat food.

“We certainly saw an increase in sales and just customers coming from all over the place because of the lack of dog food in grocery stores and bigger box stores," Christy said.

But she said the business boom ended when the statewide stay-at-home order was issued to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“After that, we certainly saw a decline in people coming, which I completely understand,” Christy said.

The state designated Cosmo’s as an essential business due to the pet food they sell.

But even though they can stay open, the Ziskas said business has slowed down.

They want everyone to know that they’re open.

“We’re doing curbside service only," Christy said. "You already have paid for your things over the phone and so we can just put them in the back of your car without any direct contact."

The store will also deliver pet food on case-by-case basis.

“We feel for everybody ... their lives have been changed, our lives have been changed a little bit,” Jack said.

The Ziskas said their hope is to ease at least one concern by offering a convenient option for pet owners.
