Valor Christian High School students in Guatemala during volcanic eruption

DENVER, Colo. — A group of Valor Christian students and school leaders are in Guatemala in the aftermath of the deadly volcanic eruption.

The group is staying in nearby Antigua. They arrived a few weeks ago to learn Spanish and to do volunteer work.

Valor Christian alumna and trip leader Laura Cooper talked with Denver7 reporter Eric Lupher on Facebook. She said the group was on a field trip when the volcano erupted and that everyone in the group was okay. She described what it looked like when the group returned to Antigua.

"We returned about an hour after the eruption to find the town covered in sand and ash," she said.

A host dad is a doctor and is volunteering as an emergency medic, according to Cooper.

Only first responders and certain aid groups are allowed in the affected area. Cooper said the group hopes to go into the volcano zone when it's safe to visit a shelter where it's said 150 children are housed who have been separated from their parents.

"We are just looking for any way to participate," she said.
