DENVER -- It's expected to be a busy holiday season for the United States Postal Service as millions of packages will be shipped out.

The USPS expects around 850 million packages will be delivered this year, according to postal spokesperson for Colorado David Rupert.

"It's a big increase -- 10 percent over last year. Every year for the last five years it’s been double digit increases as people are more comfortable shopping online," Rupert said.

These are the recommended dates to ensure deliveries are made in time for Christmas Day:

  • Dec. 11 – First Class and Priority for overseas military personnel
  • Dec. 14 – Domestic Ground Delivery
  • Dec. 16 – Military Express Mail
  • Dec. 19 -- First-Class cards and letters
  • Dec 20 –  Priority Mail
  • Dec 22 – Priority Mail Express

So far, deliveries are running smoothly, but that can change.

"We are really blessed because we have great weather across much of the country, but a storm roles through or something, you want to be ahead of the game," said Rupert.

Rupert adds the biggest issue when people send out gifts is having the wrong address.

The post office will be allowing you to see what you’re getting before it gets mailed. You can digitally preview the outside of your packages and letters and track them.
