BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder police are searching for people of interest after a Halloween party shooting late Saturday night that killed one University of Colorado Boulder student and critically injured another one at a house in the University Hill neighborhood.

There was a party being held at the home near 7th and Marine streets. It was registered with a system set up by the University of Colorado Boulder and the city's police department.

"At 9:56 p.m., our dispatch center reached out to the people at the home because they had registered their party with us, telling them that we had the complaint and they needed to stop the noise," Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said in a news conference early Sunday morning.

Officers responded and issued a nuisance-party ticket and shut down the party.

Just before 11:30 p.m., police started receiving calls of a shooting at the home.

"The first police officers from Boulder PD arrived on scene, encountered two people with gunshot wounds, one of which they applied a tourniquet," Redfearn said

Both victims were 19-year-old men who attended CU Boulder.

They were transported to Boulder Community Hospital, where one died and the other remained in critical condition Sunday, according to Redfearn.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will identify the deceased victim. This is Boulder’s first homicide in 2026.

Police interviewed around 20 witnesses and identified two persons of interest whom they want to question.

One of the people of interest is a man with facial hair and short dark hair, wearing a red hoodie under a black jacket.

Throughout the afternoon Sunday, CU Boulder students and Boulder residents stopped by the house where the shooting occurred.

Many telling Denver7's Tyler Melito how shocked and sad they were over what happened.

Elliot Albert, a CU Boulder student who lives next door on Marine Street told Melito he was at a party elsewhere on Halloween but when the shooting happened he quickly learned what had happened.

"Instantly, everybody I know that lives in this area started calling each other, making sure everybody was okay," Albert shared. "I don't know anybody that was at the party other than my neighbors, but from yeah, from what I know, it's just like shooting, and it's really horrible that this has happened."

Albert saying Halloween is usually a very exciting time on campus, but this tragedy shook the community to its core.

"It's such a bummer, I mean, like I wish that people could come out here and have fun and like not have to worry about what's going down," Albert said. "It's neighborly love. I love these kids."

Albert adding he typically knows people who go out in Boulder, but Halloween weekend is different.

"I do notice that when it's Halloween, it's just like chaos, and you don't know half of the people out and it's like you got to be careful," Albert explained.

A mother of a student who lives up the street from the shooting brought by flowers and candles to the home to create a small memorial.

She told Melito off camera that as a parent, she can only imagine what the students who live in the house and the families affected are going through, and she wanted to let them know they are loved and their community supports them.
