WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Two people were killed in crashes in Weld County early Saturday after a head-on collision and then a second crash into one of the vehicles involved, officials said.
The crashes happened about 1:20 a.m. near Weld County roads 47 and 30. A man driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer and hauling a trailer veered across the center line and struck a semi-truck head-on, according to Colorado State Patrol.
The Trailblazer driver, a 27-year-old man from Kingsburg, died at the scene. Alcohol was the suspected reason for the crash, authorities said. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured but engine oil from both vehicles spilled onto the roadway and hazmat crews were still cleaning up the spill later Saturday morning.
Several minutes after the crash, a woman driving north on County Road 47 struck the semi-truck from behind. The woman, a 30-year-old from Wheat Ridge, also died at the scene. Alcohol and drugs were suspected in her crash, according to Colorado State Patrol.
