DENVER — Denver police are investigating a shooting Friday that killed a man and left a woman critically injured near N. Broadway and W. 3rd Avenue.

The Denver Police Department said a man was pronounced deceased at the hospital and a woman is in critical condition. One man is in custody, police said.

Investigations Division Chief Joe Montoya said police responded to the initial report of a shooting at 321 N. Broadway and found two people with gunshot wounds in a parking lot at a Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Police confirmed the two people shot were Enterprise customers.

Matthew Dodge, who witnessed the shooting, said he could hear the lot gunshots "clear as day," and right after he heard someone screaming.

"I ran over to my window quickly, spotted a lady running frantically back and forth, and that is when I noticed a guy first running south on Broadway," Dodge said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a witness pointed out the suspect to police. Officers were able to take the man into custody at a nearby wine shop, Baker Wine & Spirits.

On Saturday, police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Derron Harris. He is being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

According to a probable cause statement, a witness pointed offices to Harris, who was walking northbound on Broadway. He ran into Baker Wine and Spirits, located at 440 North Broadway, where he was arrested.

Montoya said they were seeking a person of interest who was with the suspect when he arrived. The person was not involved in the shooting and was later located, police said. The woman is not currently facing charges. This was not an active shooter situation, according to police.

Dodge said he typically feels safe in the neighborhood and walks his dog in the area multiple times a day.

"Today when I walked my dog across the street, I think about how our paths could have easily crossed," Dodge said.

The victims were identified as Patrick and Shannon Huhn, according to Kurt Ruffing, the principal of the school where Patrick Huhn and his sons attended. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed 54-year-old Patrick Huhn as the victim on May 10.

The Huhns were visiting from Ohio, according to Ruffing.

"Shannon, I believe, is still in the hospital so we are praying for her recovery and praying for the whole family," Elder High School Principal Kurt Ruffing said.
