A special program is taking future teachers outside in hopes they'll take their future students outside.
The program is called Teach the Teachers. In partnership with the Indian Peaks Wilderness and the Northern Colorado Center for Urban Education, Teach the Teachers took more than 50 future teachers outside in 2018.
"A lot of these future teachers haven't been to these areas in mountains," program founder Jessica Abel Feld said. "So the goal is they'll explore new areas and take their students to these similar areas for a field trip. It's also to encourage them to explore urban places in the Denver metro area for places to take students for shorter field trips."
Feld is asking the community for donations of new and used hiking/outdoor gear and clothing for the teachers.
"The hope is that these teachers, once they feel more comfortable outdoors, will take students around their campus, around the school yard, etc.," said Feld.
