BRIGHTON, Colo. – The man accused of killing a 13-year-old boy and seriously injuring his mother, brother and one other will remain in jail.
A judge denied bond for 23-year-old Jeremy Webster Monday at his first court hearing since being arrested in Thursday's shooting, which police are calling a "road rage" incident.
Webster appeared in court in Adams County wearing a blue jumpsuit and glasses. He did not speak throughout the hearing but was represented by two public defenders.
Judge Donald Quick presided over the hearing and denied bail for Webster because he is facing first-degree murder charges.
Judge Quick also forbid Webster from having contact with the victims or any potential witnesses in the case.
Public Defender Kimberly Gonzalez asked for the defense to be present during the autopsy of the 13-year-old victim. However, that request was denied.
The defense also complained about the amount of media attention the case has already gotten. Judge Quick said he would allow cameras in the courtroom for the first hearing but said that would likely not be the case for future hearings.
The defense also asked the judge for the law enforcement officers who interrogated Webster to preserve and present their notes so that the defense can have a chance to read through them.
According to police, Webster and 41-year-old Meghan Bigelow got into a road rage incident. Webster followed Bigelow for about a mile to a dentist’s office in Westminster. When Bigelow exited the car with her three sons, Webster confronted her.
The two got into a verbal argument, and that’s when Webster allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the family. Webster also reportedly shot a man who was in his truck in the parking lot with his 9-year-old daughter. That man, John Gale, is expected to be okay. His daughter was not injured.
Bigelow and her 8-year-old son were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The Westminster Police Department is set to release an update on their condition as early as Monday.
Bigelow’s oldest son, Vaughn, was killed in the confrontation. According to arrest documents, Webster shot the family, walked away and then returned to reshoot Vaughn while he was lying on the ground.
Bigelow’s 12-year-old son, Cooper, was not injured in the confrontation and helped police track down his brother’s killer by telling police about what happened and the fact that his mother took a picture of Webster’s license plate.
A GoFundMe accounthas already raised more than $98,000 for the family.
Westminster police say Webster confessed to the shooting and said he has mental health issues and just started a new medication that day.
The next hearing for Webster is set for Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Adams County Court.
