AURORA, Colo. – A student was found with a gun at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora on Thursday, officials said.
The student was taken into custody without incident, according to a message Cherry Creek Schools sent to parents.
A parent had called the school to report that a student potentially had a gun. School officials found the student and police responded, searched the student and found the weapon.
The gun wasn't reported through the Safe2Tell app, but the school district encouraged parents to always report potentially dangerous behavior through the anonymous reporting tool.
In January, a Smoky Hill wrestling coach was fired after allegedly not reporting that a student was armed with a gun, officials said. Tommy Lloyd was charged with one count of child abuse – failure to report, a class 3 misdemeanor.
Three other Smoky Hill employees were placed on administrative leave while the district investigated the alleged off-campus incident, but they were cleared and returned to work.
