ARVADA -- Fans attending the Arvada West girls volleyball game were not asked to wear the school's colors; instead they wore blue and white to show their support for Legacy High School.
Both teams did their usual warm-ups before the game before putting competition aside. The Arvada West team read a heartfelt statement as the girls lined up for the national anthem.
"In light of the recent accident on Sunday, the Arvada West volleyball program and I wanted to show our support," said Kaitlin Kennedy as she addressed the opposing team.
She continued, "Our crowd is here wearing blue and white and we also have a card here signed by all of us for the football team. We’re hoping you could take it and get it to them."
During the team introductions, each player from Arvada West handed a flower to every player on Legacy's team and the coach.
"Just getting those flowers almost made me tear up just because of how sweet it was," said Bailee Newham, a volleyball player and sophomore at Legacy High School.
Schools all over Colorado are showing their support using the hashtag #LegacyStrong on social media. Students are posting pictures of homemade banners for the coaches and students at Legacy.
"I thought it was great. That's exactly what we need right now and it helped a lot," said Emily Brandenstein, a senior at Legacy.
The players on the Arvada West volleyball team came up with the idea to create a tribute for their opponents. It started with one girl texting their coach and soon the entire team planned the event Tuesday night.
"You can still be competitive but show that you’re caring and compassionate," said Debbie Pospisil, the Arvada West Volleyball Coach.
