Unified football kicks off across Colorado

Posted

Poudre High School faced off against Fort Collins in Unified Football for the first game of the season Tuesday evening. This is the first year either school had a Unified football team.

Unified football is a place for Special Olympians and their school peers to play football against other similar teams.

Organizers said this might be the only time the athletes will get to play the team sport.

The games help students learn about teamwork and help build coordination.

"One of the things that I'm really excited about is that our team is really starting to work together and communicate as a team," said Poudre HS coach Jeff Shelly. "Really fun to watch tonight."

Parents enjoyed the game too. Coaches made sure to include all of the athletes on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

"She just loves being able to represent her school with her friends, with her peers," said Sherry Grey. Grey's daughter is #1 for FCHS.

"Anything Unified it's great to have support," said Colin Hamlin, a peer helper. "Because it's not that well known in the school district."

The final score was 48-40, PHS. However, coaches said it doesn't matter who wins just as long as the kids are having fun.
