LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A pickup driver and a Lakewood police officer were transported to a hospital after the pickup driver crashed into the back of the police SUV Sunday evening, the department said.

Around 8:17 p.m. Sunday, an officer with the Lakewood Police Department began investigating an abandoned vehicle on Kipling Parkway near Dartmouth Avenue when the driver of a Chevy truck crashed into the back of the officer's SUV, according to the police department.

The officer was inside his car at the time and had the vehicle's emergency lights on.

The driver and the officer were both transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Southbound Kipling Parkway at Morrison Road was shut down for several hours while detectives worked at the scene.

Police say they are investigating alcohol as a possible factor.
