DENVER – Police said they believe that the driver of a pickup thought to have caused a deadly crash on Morrison Road early Monday morning was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on W. Morrison Road near Bear Creek Boulevard. The Lakewood Police Department said Monday afternoon that the driver of a white Toyota Tacoma was westbound in the eastbound lanes – either stopped or driving very slowly – when the crash happened.

A white Nissan Versa headed eastbound on Morrison Road is believed to have hit the Toyota as it sat in the road. After the crash, the Nissan ended up in a field south of Morrison Road, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, police said.

“At this time, alcohol and drugs are suspected for the driver of the Toyota Tacoma,” Lakewood police said in a news release. “The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office for review of Vehicular Homicide charges.”

Police said the name of the driver would not be released until charges are filed. The Jefferson County coroner will release the name of the driver of the Nissan.

The westbound lanes of Morrison Road reopened just after 6 a.m., while the eastbound lanes reopened around 10 a.m.

Lakewood police ask anyone with information about the crash to call JeffCo dispatch at 303-980-7300.
