DENVER -- Denver police have identified a man who's being held on suspicion of vehicular homicide following a fiery crash on I-70 that killed a driver of a semi-truck early Sunday.
Ivan Gerardo Zamarripa-Castaneda, 26, was arrested at his home on Sunday afternoon.
Police said Zamarripa-Castaneda was driving a pickup in the eastbound lanes of I-70 when he collided with a semi near I-25 just after midnight.
The semi caught fire after the crash and the driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police caught up with Zamarripa-Castaneda more than 12 hours later at his home. Officers said he fled the crash scene before police arrived and without offering any kind of assistance.
Officers said Zamarripa-Castaneda smelled of alcohol and had numerous signs of impairment, including slurred speech and watery eyes. He consented to field sobriety tests and blood tests, the results of which are pending, police said.
Zamarripa-Castaneda is being held at Denver's downtown detention center.
