AURORA, Colo. — A driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in Aurora Friday night was struck and killed by a different vehicle after getting outside his car to render aid, according to the Aurora Police Department.
The crashes occurred around 7:50 p.m. outside Children’s Hospital Colorado near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and North Uvalda Street.
Police said the male driver of a Mitsubishi sedan was traveling westbound on Colfax when he fatally struck a man who was crossing the street outside the crosswalk.
The driver of the Mitsubishi immediately pulled over to render aid when he too was struck by a second vehicle, a Mercury Mountaineer SUV, according to police.
The pedestrian crossing East Colfax Avenue was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the Mitsubishi was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the Mountaineer stayed on the scene and no injuries were reported from inside that vehicle.
The identifications of both men will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office once they have been positively identified and their next-of-kin has been notified.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident to contact the Aurora Police Department.
The westbound lanes were shut down following the incidents. The road was reopened several hours later.
