PUEBLO, Colo. — Police in Pueblo shot and killed a man late Tuesday afternoon, and one witness told police after the shooting that the suspect had fired at the officers. Authorities are still investigating if that is accurate.

The incident started around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the Pueblo Police Department received a call from a person along the 1100 block of Jackson Street who reported a nearby man with a weapon. The person said the man had approached her home and asked her if she’d seen the police because he knew they were looking for him and he wanted to turn himself in, according to police.

The caller said the man pulled a handgun from his waistband, “manipulated the action as if he was chambering a round,” and then put it back in his waistband, according to police.

The person called 911 after the man walked away.

When an officer arrived at the scene in her marked police vehicle, she spotted the man in the area. According to police, the man pointed a gun at the officer. The officer sent a description of the man and where he was headed to her fellow officers, but did not engage with the suspect, police said.

A short time later, police located the man on the property of a home along the 1100 block of Bragdon Avenue.

The details of what happened next remain under investigation but led to three officers opening fire on the man, police said. One witness told police the man fired a handgun at the officers.

The man died at the scene. He was a 43-year-old Pueblo resident, police said. The Pueblo County Coroner's Office identified him Wednesday afternoon as Kevin Pulido.

Authorities said they are still investigating if the man had actually fired his gun at officers.

The Tenth Judicial District Critical Incident Team responded to the scene and initiated an investigation.

The three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol.
