AURORA, Colo. — Colorado State Patrol has started an investigation after an Aurora officer in a police car struck and killed a pedestrian.

The Aurora Police Department said the crash happened around 11:25 p.m. at S. Nucla Street and E. Quincy Avenue.

The officer was on-duty at the time of the crash, the police department said. Colorado State Patrol said the officer was driving eastbound on E. Quincy Avenue in a marked Ford SUV and was not responding to a call for service at the time of the crash.

The pedestrian, who was only identified as a 37-year-old man from Salt Lake City, died at the scene, CSP said.

Investigators said the man was dressed in dark clothes and was lying in the eastbound lanes of E. Quincy Avenue before he was run over. He was seen earlier that night at a nearby store and appeared to be "highly intoxicated," CSP said.

Eastbound Quincy Avenue was closed between S. Memphis Street and S. Buckley Road for the investigation, but reopened by 4:55 a.m.
