LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Officials in Lakewood said they have found what appears to be blue-green algae at Bear Creek Greenbelt Park.

They believe they found blue-green algae, also known as toxic cyanobacteria, at the horseshoe pond in Bear Creek Greenbelt Park, just east of the Stonehouse.

The site is being tested for toxins. Warning signs are in place now.

Officials are asking residents to avoid swimming in this area and to ensure pets do not enter the water.

Previously, there was concern of the dangerous algae at Chatfield State Park’s dog park, but Colorado Parks and Wildlife said testing came back negative.
However, the algae was confirmed in Wonderland Lake in north Boulder and the Quincy Reservoir in Aurora.

It was reported in Thunderbird Lake in Boulder, but officials do not believe the type of algae in the lake was toxic.
