Mount Evans Scenic Byway named second-most breathtaking view from U.S. roadways

Many, if not most, Coloradans have experienced how mountain adventuring can truly take your breath away. Sometimes from the views, sometimes from the altitude.

Geotab, a global company focused on providing analytics to help customers manage fleets of commercial vehicles, recently ranked the most breathtaking views in the United States based on road data.

So, it’s no surprise Colorado made it on the list — Mount Evans Scenic Byway ranked No. 2 on the list, beat only by Alaska’s Dalton Highway.

At 14,132 feet at its peak, the scenic byway is the highest paved road in North America and one of the highest in the world. It climbs about 9,000 feet to the top. The roadway is usually open only from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

“In general, western U.S. scenery is the best, with a tendency to offer better visibility – up to 100 miles on clear days,” said Tony Bynum, an outdoor photographer and conservationist. “However, most of the higher elevations in the west are closed in winter, whereas the central and eastern roads are often available all year round.”

Geotab used Bynum’s expertise to rank the views after identifying the highest peaks in the United States that are reachable by road.
